Lingering questions about Benghazi

The attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi has become a political football in the presidential campaign, with all the grandstanding and misinformation that entails. But Fox News has raised some questions about the attack that deserve a clearer answer from the Obama administration.
Fox’s Jennifer Griffin reported Friday that CIA officers in Benghazi had been told to “stand down” when they wanted to deploy from their base at the annex to repel the attack on the consulate, about a mile away. Fox also reported that the CIA officers requested military support when the annex came under fire later that night but that their request had been denied.

The Benghazi tragedy was amplified by Charles Woods, the father of slain CIA contractor Tyrone Woods. He told Fox’s Sean Hannity that White House officials who didn’t authorize military strikes to save the embattled CIA annex were “cowards” and “are guilty of murdering my son.”
The Fox “stand down” story prompted a strong rebuttal from the CIA: “We can say with confidence that the agency reacted quickly to aid our colleagues during that terrible evening in Benghazi. Moreover, no one at any level in the CIA told anybody not to help those in need; claims to the contrary are simply inaccurate.”
So what did happen in Benghazi on the night of Sept. 11, when Woods, Ambassador Christopher Stevens and two others Americans were killed? The best way to establish the facts would be a detailed, unclassified timeline of events; officials say they are preparing one, and that it may be released later this week. That’s a must, even in the volatile final week of the campaign. In the meantime, here’s a summary of some of the basic issues that need to be clarified.
First, on the question of whether Woods and others were made to wait when they asked permission to move out immediately to try to rescue those at the consulate. The answer seems to be yes, but not for very long. There was a brief, initial delay — two people said it was about 20 minutes — before Woods was allowed to leave. One official said Woods and at least one other CIA colleague were “in the car revving the engine,” waiting for permission to go. Woods died about six hours later, after he returned to the annex.
The main reason for the delay, several sources said, was that CIA officials were making urgent contact with a Libyan militia, known as the February 17 Brigade, which was the closest thing to an organized security force in Benghazi. The United States depends on local security to protect U.S. diplomatic facilities everywhere, and officials wanted to coordinate any response to the consulate attack. After this delay, Woods and his colleague proceeded to the consulate.
Here’s my question: Was it wise to depend on a Libyan militia that clearly wasn’t up to the job? Could it have made a difference for those under attack at the consulate if Woods had moved out as soon as he was, in one official’s words, “saddled and ready”?
Second, why didn’t the United States send armed drones or other air assistance to Benghazi immediately? This one is harder to answer. The CIA did dispatch a quick-reaction force that night from Tripoli, with about eight people, but it had trouble at first reaching the compound. One of its members, Glen Doherty, died along with Woods when a mortar hit the roof of the annex about 4 a.m.
What more could have been done? A Joint Special Operations Command team was moved that night to Sigonella air base in Sicily, for quick deployment to Benghazi or any of the other U.S. facilities in danger that night across North Africa. Armed drones could also have been sent. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta summarized last Thursday the administration’s decision to opt for caution: “You don’t deploy forces into harm’s way without knowing what’s going on.”
Looking back, it may indeed have been wise not to bomb targets in Libya that night. Given the uproar in the Arab world, this might have been the equivalent of pouring gasoline on a burning fire. But the anguish of Woods’s father is understandable: His son’s life might have been saved by a more aggressive response. The Obama administration needs to level with the country about why it made its decisions.
A final, obvious point: The “fog of battle” that night was dense not just in Benghazi but in Cairo, Tunis and elsewhere. U.S. officials needed better intelligence. That’s the toughest problem to address, but the most important.

It is clear from reading so many of these posts sent in by the Progressives/Liberals that the LSM has been doing a good job of covering this issue up. So many have no idea this has been going on for weeks. They keep saying" let's see what happens" ,and " where's the evidence?" They do not know congress is asking for an ivestigation, and that the president has said one thing and then lied about it in public. Why no press conference for 3 weeks on something this important? I guarantee most of them do not even know it happened on the anniversary of 9/11. But in 2000 one week before the election, Bush's 20 year old DWI charge was all over the front pages. When are we going to start holding the media to account for their corruptness?

Jay Leno of "The Tonight Show" abides by a simple comedy credo: "Write joke. Tell joke. Collect check."

You can add two more items to his list - "Read headlines. Ignore party affiliation."
While David Letterman used his Monday night telecast to attack Republicans for trying to steal elections, an imaginary issue summoned from the far-left fever swamps, Leno is reading actual headlines for inspiration.
Last night, he let loose on President Barack Obama for his role in Benghazi-Gate.
“Well, ‘Don't Ask, Don't Tell’ is back - not for gays in the military. It's President Obama's new policy for questions about Libya. Don't ask, don't tell."
Leno also chided the Obama campaign for Lena Dunham's ridiculous ad comparing your "first time" to voting for Obama.
“Have you seen that new Obama campaign ad that equates voting with sex? It’s kind of clever. It uses innuendo to try and woo young female voters.”
“Like one line says,” he continued, “'Your first time shouldn't be with just anybody. It should be with a great guy who really understands women.’"
“But, on the other hand, if it is your first time, you might want to do it with someone who doesn't need eight years to get the job done. That's all I'm saying. That's all I'm saying.”

oh, wait... that would be Barry the Loser/User's MO...

"HELP!" They cried. Obama Denied. American heroes died. Then Obama Lied.

  •  Yep,  when OBOZO asked the SEAL's to get Osama, they got him.
When the SEAL's asked for help, he forgot them and let them DIE  !!
  • POLITIKILLS
Seems more likely that when Dennis Miller visited Leno's show and verbally destroyed him that he realized how uneducated and biased he sounded.  Since that visit Leno has seemed bit more conservative and questioning in regards to Obama.  Maybe he isn't drinking as much of the koolaid as he once did.
  • That description " uneducated and biased" applies to almost the entire left wing spectrum. Never was the adage "we believe what we want to believe" as true as it is with liberals, truth or facts have no place in their belief system. just blind adoration for Obama.
  • STEVEDRUMS
There's a difference between being an honest "liberal" like my Mom was and being "far-left" like say...a lot of Hollywood. I think Leno is a liberal, but he doesn't run around making crass statements and seems to draw a line which Letterman hasn't done for quite a while. I consider myself an Independent/Republican but don't subscribe to some of the social positions of the "right wing". Having a Republican dad and a Liberal Mom taught me early on how to balance these things out.

. . .  the last bit was the best . . . "8 years to get the job done"
. . . that was particularly funny.  Now that I killed it . . . watch it again out of sympathy.
    :)
  • JEFFWRIDGE, FORMERLY HOOSIERHISTORIAN
See that, lefties? It really isn't that hard to poke fun at Obama. Finding something funny about him is as easy as paying attention and being willing to make the joke.
  • CRUZIN77
The Obama jokes come out only when they see their Messiah is losing. Hardly genuine.
  •  As a  democrat I am ashamed of my party, I never believed they could stoop as low as they have. I can no longer vote for nor tolerate Obama.
  • BOBVEDARI
Then I suggest you change your party affiliation to Independent. NEVER let anyone count on your vote again. Make every blasted politician earn it. Otherwise, what does liberty mean?
  • CRUZIN77
That makes sense unless you're in a state that needs a party affiliation to vote in the primaries.
  • na, keep it and let them assume they have your support.  Makes for an interesting election season
  • POORHARDWORKER
Congratulations on seeing reality!!!  We welcome you...
  • You didn't leave the Democrat Party... they left you.  I live in one of the most liberal parts of the country and I hear the same lament every day.
  • HYTIMES
Welcome to reality. Took me 20 years to get over liberal social programming. Finally, saw the light when Gore ran for president. I'm glad I took the red pill.
  • LADYKRYSTYNA

Mine was a slow process -  it was a combo of Clinton and the Lewinsky scandal, the 2000 election and the Democrat reaction to it, and then their ultimate reaction to 9/11 that did me in.  Each event pushed me farther and farther away, until I actually started listening to, watching and reading conservative/libertarian thought.
I'm glad I took the red pill, too.
    :-D
  • LUKUJ
Good for you!  You have shown you do have morals, which seems these days to mean you can't be a Democrat.  God bless!
  • LADYKRYSTYNA

I was a moderate liberal once myself.  Never officially a "Democrat" though.  But I was ashamed of my party after Clinton, and even more ashamed after their temper tantrum in 2000.  After 9/11, I was beyond ashamed and just plain old angry and fed up.
I'm now an Independent Constitutional Conservatarian.  I'm NOT a registered Republican.  I had always had problems with both parties, I just  needed to figure out what my principles were, what my ideology was (and ideology is NOT a bad thing.  The Left has an ideology, they just like to hide it from everyone, because once it gets out, nobody wants what they are selling).
I think Bobvedari has a very good idea - if you can avoid it, don't register with any party.  Make politicians earn your vote.
  • TRIKKE

If only all Democrats would actually look and SEE obama like you have done.  As an Independent that is what I do.  I look at both sides and everywhere in between, and actually pay attention to what the candidates have said and done (or not done).   We cannot just blather the party line.  We have to pay attention
I have a friend who is liberal.  He is otherwise very intelligent, except when it comes to politics.  One evening he actually said - - out loud - - "Oh I wish someone who thinks the way I do would just give me a list of how to vote!"  Florida has 11 amendments to Florida's constitution up for vote.  They are long and need actually research and thought.  My friend just didn't want to do his own thinking but still wanted to vote!
  • GRANDPAMARK
Yup - intellectual laziness - a large hallmark of the modern "Liberal Mind" <spits></spits>

Yea but,,,,,,,,,,,,,,how many women have I known, or know, or will know that just keep on hooking up with guys like Obama.  All talk,,,sweetness, promises of a diamond,,,,,,,,,,,and then...Poof, he's gone like a popcorn fart.

So ObaMao is actually admitting that voting for him is akin to getting scr*w*d.  Finally, truth from Dear Leader.

Did anyone else get the creepy feeling, when watching that ad *for the first time* that you were watching a 14 year old girl who wanted to have sex with a 40 year old pervert? The way she giggles at the end of that ad. Made my skin crawl - especially when I think of the teenage daughters of some friends... Giggling because you think some perv understands you? You're 14 years old for crying out loud.... What are you doing wanting to get in the sack with a 40 year old in the first place? Oh - you're not 14? Then why are you acting like you are?
  • TRIKKE

It is a disgusting ad and most undignified for a presidential candidate!  But them, look whose ad it is!  It fits.
    Vote OUT the obama-trauma.

Don't think for a minute this is an example of a leopard changing his spots; this merely a comic going for a laugh. Leno won't be doing any last minute endorsements of Romney, much less changing his own vote. The one difference between Leno and Letterman and those of that ilk are that Leno will briefly take a jab at those on the left for purposes of a laugh.
  • SOFAKINGCOOLONE

"The one difference between Leno and Letterman and those of that ilk are that Leno will briefly take a jab at those on the left for purposes of a laugh."
You mean, like real commedians USED to do? The politicians of either party, used to be a target-rich enviromment for ALL comedians.
  • YAZ8
Why can't the president simply look into the camera and explain who gave the order to not send help, and why that decision was made.  I will not vote for him but at least I would respect him for being honest.  Now he looks not only incompetent and petty, but a liar as well.
  • MARTY7777

    It's a clear choice.
    Intellectual Leader/Intellectual Assistant  or  KID/CLOWN
    Capitalism vs Communism
What really bothers me is the fact that Obama won't come clean about what really happened in Benghazi yet he is so quick to step up to the plate and play Super Hero (political) when a natural disaster hits the east coast.
Now he is Chris Christie's new BFF?  It's APPALLING!!!
    ROMNEY/RYAN  2012!
  • TRIKKE
I am surprised that Christie has not slapped him down.  Christie thanked him for basically doing what we hired him to do and the campaign is pushing it as wild enthusiastic praise just short of endorsement of obama.
  • HYTIMES
Yup. It's time that the other comics try to catch up with the intelligence and courage of Dennis Miller.
  • CAPTAINRENAULTA
I'm shocked, shocked that NBC did not pull the plug on this one. Seems there is still someone in NBC's management that understands you have to make a profit to keep the lights on.
  • GUN_FIGHTERNATION
Jay Leno, like Dennis Leary, Craig Ferguson, and many other comedians, may swerve to the left in most thing but they don't shy away from slamming their own side when the left screws up. More power to him!
  • CALLMEISHMAEL

Want to know Why Obama has nothing to say about Benghazi? Why was Ambassador Stevens sent to a city where every other country and even the Red Cross had already evacuated their people? Why was Stevens' security detail removed after he pleaded for more after several previous attacks on the same compound including breeches of the security wall wide enough to admit 40 terrorists? Benghazi is a port city on the Gulf of Sidra. The 6th Fleet was nearby. Help could have been sent but wasn't. Why were the Seals ordered to stand down? What could answer all these troubling questions? Only one thing, Obama wanted Stevens dead. The only question remaining is, why?
Obama wants to cut the "red tape." Where was he after Deepwater Horizon?

Plan A:  Jihad freaks capture the Ambasador, use Blind Shek as trade to get him back, relations with arabs soar.
Plan B:  Deny, deny, deny; cover up, cover up, cover up.
  • IMJUSTAGUY

We've all heard about the Obama ad that likens voting for him to having sex, but did you hear there's another doosey?
This Obama ad has foul-mouthed, ornery senior citizens acting badly.

  • KRISMJS
Or the ones with the children singing about the how republicans destroyed the country? The campaign must be grasping at straws putting out this crap.
  • Shows they have no shame...bullies, liars and foul mouth antics seems to be the way both Biden and Obama behave.
  • AZSMITTY
Leno finally realised the implications of Bengazi.  It takes some years to admit to turning a blind-eye because they support a particular entity, party or individual.  As information continues to seep out of the cracks the more damning the information becomes.  Removal from office even after the election has been settled and Romney has been elected, needs to occur.  Some will say that Obamas' term is about over, let it go.  No we cannot let deriliction of duty as Commander and Chief go unanswered.  Leno has turned a page,  his naivety has vanished.
  • KRISMJS
Wow.  Bravo to Leno.  If Benghazi wasn't such a tragic event, I would have laughed. The end was super funny. That ad is so ridiculous.
  • 1CONSERVATIVE
Too bad the MSM doesn't think Benghazi is important.
